TheVietnamese Artist-in-Residence in New York

“War is what is usually thought of when the word Vietnam is mentioned in the USA . It is certainly true that Vietnam has had a long history of foreign invaders and a fierce struggle for independence. These wars had devastated much of the country and today the legacy of this destruction is still evident in the economy and the society. One element that is helpful in a developing society is contemporary art and in Vietnam there is an interesting, but small core of young artists excited to explore this new territory. There are many talented artists in Vietnam working in more traditional ways of painting and sculpture. As enjoyable as this art is though, it does not intellectually challenge the artist or the viewer. A truly contemporary art practice, explores endless new possibilities for making art and as such has an effect on the thinking of not only the artists but offers a modern view of life to the society.”

by Rodney Dickson, Director of Vietnam Art Projects New York.
